Families and Friends, as many of you know, adult prisons and juvenile facilities are plagued with sexual assaults and dangerous living conditions. If your loved one hasn’t been attacked then they likely live in fear of being attacked. Since the beginning of prisons in this country the threat has existed. Today, we have the opportunity to change this for the millions in cages around this country. Whether you have a loved one locked up or not, we ask you to join us by signing onto to our letter of recommendations as soon as possible.

The Prison Rape Elimination Act is the first opportunity for substantial change to prisons and juvenile facilities in our lifetimes. The Campaign has created a sign on letter of recommendations to the commission. It only takes a minute to sign on and we are seeking at least 500 signatures by Friday morning. This issue is very personal to me and I ask that you sign and send it to your friends, church groups, reading clubs, family, anyone who you think would take the minute or so to do it. Having the 500 signatures shows that people across the country believe that being in prison is the punishment, people should not be violated and raped in addition. Help us to end this culture inside prisons and juvenile facilities today!

To sign on, just send me (Familiescantwait@yahoo.com) a quick email with your name, state and how you would like to be identified (mother, friend, advocate, concerned citizen, etc) and copy Justin Baker at jjcampaign@cfyj.org. Just say, “Sign me on!”

Please join us for a thoughtful conversation among sisters, of all backgrounds, about this soul-stirring movie. I was sitting there watching the movie with my eyes glued to the screen…sometimes tearful, sometimes joyful and sometimes traumatized…but always seeing parts of my own story. There may be varying opinions about the cinematography but the heart wrenching, gritty truths of these sisters is undeniable, in my opinion. Haven’t you seen one of these women before? Or maybe you are like me in that each character tells a piece of my story.

Immediately upon seeing the movie, I knew that I wanted to share my thoughts and feelings with other women and, more importantly, hear your thoughts and feelings. I had seen the play many, many years ago like a lot of people, so I expected a lot of it. I expected the heart of the play to be respected. I needed that because I saw the play shortly after reconciling my own suicide attempt. I saw the play when I needed the play. So here comes this movie…and, again, I expected a lot.

So join us and let’s talk in room full of women of like and different minds. Bring your diversity of thoughts, your intensity of emotion and an open mind to hear how others have been moved by the movie.

(Quoted from the WJZ) This is enough to outrage anyone!

“A 15-year-old Trenton girl was arrested for selling her 7-year-old sister for sex, handing her money and watching as the young girl was gang raped in the Rowan Towers Apartments, according to New Jersey police.
CBS

Two adults and three juveniles have been charged with gang-raping a 7-year-old girl who was sold by her 15-year-old stepsister during a party at a crime-ridden apartment building, police said Saturday.

Details on the arrests were to be announced at a Saturday night news conference at police headquarters in Trenton, the state’s capital city.

Police said the girl was offered for sale by her 15-year-old stepsister on March 28.

The teen went to a party with some men on the 13th floor of the Rowan Towers apartment building, and the younger girl tagged along because she worried about her stepsister’s safety, police said.

The 15-year-old sold sex to men in the room, then took money to let them touch the younger girl, and the touching turned to forcible sex as at least seven men raped the 7-year-old, police said.

Before the Saturday announcement of the five arrests, the 15-year-old had been charged with promoting prostitution, aggravated sexual assault and other crimes; police have not released her name. A 20-year-old man had been charged with having sex with the 15-year-old.

Mayor Doug Palmer said he met with the victim’s relatives at his office on Thursday to offer help and make sure they were able to move out of the neighborhood over safety concerns.

“We made sure they got out of the area,” he said Saturday afternoon, before the news conference.

He credited the police force for its hard work but said “we’re still not finished.” He pledged to spare no expense “to make sure that everyone responsible is brought to justice.”

“We’re still asking the community to let us know if they have any more information on this heinous crime,” he said.

Palmer met with the parents, the 7-year-old girl and her two younger siblings. The woman is the mother of the 7-year-old girl, and the man she lives with is the father of the 15-year-old. The man and woman also have two toddlers together.

He said police officers had taken the case “very personally.”

Police Director Irving Bradley would only say “it’s still an active investigation.”

Police earlier in the week were urging residents to come forward, but neighbors said they were scared of retaliation from gangs that prowl the streets if they spoke up.

Rowan Towers sits on a stretch of West State Street near downtown Trenton and is surrounded by blocks of abandoned, boarded-up homes. It’s fronted by a well-manicured lawn and features a colorful playground and a basketball court. An American flag hangs from a pole to the right of the front door.”

Here is an article from the Family Violence Prevention Fund www.endabuse.org :

Human trafficking is modern-day slavery involving people being bought, sold, and forced into slave labor and/or sexual exploitation. The United Nations recently reported that four million people are traded each year against their will to work in servitude in their own country or around the globe. Many are trafficked into the United States. It’s estimated that eighty percent of trafficking victims are women and girls. Such heinous crime must stop!
